Kapittel 1.1Initiated: AI Advisory board for the health and care sector

Background

The Ministry of Health and Care Services has asked the Norwegian Directorate of Health to continue the work to facilitate the safe introduction of AI in the health and care services in cooperation with the Medical Products Agency, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the regional health authorities and the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS) in an appropriate manner. The Norwegian Directorate of Health will lead this work.

Section 6.4 of the final report for the coordination project sets out the following recommendations:

  • that cross-agency cooperation concerning AI in the health and care sector continues.
  • that the Ministry of Health and Care Services clarifies an expectation of continuing cooperation between government agencies within the field of AI.
  • that an arena be established where the government agencies, regional health authorities, KS and the resource network “Better use of artificial intelligence in Norwegian healthcare services” (KIN) can continue to pursue a dialogue and hold strategic discussions, corresponding to the steering group meetings.
  • that the cross-agency collaboration projects concerning AI in the health and care sector are considered and followed up in the National council model for eHealth

Status

  • The AI Advisory board has been established.
  • Two AI Advisory board meetings have been held, on 8 May and 7 June 2024.

The AI Advisory board will advise the Norwegian Directorate of Health on strategic roadmap choices and fundamental questions and recommend prioritisation and implementation of measures to facilitate the safe and effective introduction of AI in the health and care sector [23]

Plans going forward

  • The AI Advisory board will meet four to six times a year.

Who collaborates?

The Norwegian Board of Health Supervision, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA), the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, the Central Norway Regional Health Authority, Northern Norway Regional Health Authority and KS. The KIN network acts as an observer. The Medical Products Agency (DMP) participates depending on the agenda.
