Background
Section 6.2 of the final report for the coordination project states the following recommendation:
- that the healthcare sector engages in relevant standardisation work relating to AI so that the sector can both build expertise on and contribute to standardisation work.
Status
Standards Norway has set up a mirror committee for AI led by the Norwegian Digitalisation Agency [39] The Norwegian Directorate of Health has taken the initiative to establish and lead a health working group in the mirror committee so that the sector can both build expertise on and contribute to standardisation work with its needs.
The work will help to ensure the appropriate, ethical and effective use of AI in the healthcare sector by
- monitoring the standardisation work
- contributing to standardisation work relating to requirements and needs from the service
- building and disseminating expertise concerning AI standardisation work in the healthcare sector
Standards commissioned by the European Commission to support the implementation of the AI Act (europalov.no) are high-priority areas [40]. The work of the working group will help to prepare the health and care services for the AI Act when it comes into effect. As of 1 May 2024, the working group is engaged in work relating to risk management, a trust framework and data management.
Plan going forward
- Participation in standardisation work.
- Mobilise more people from the healthcare sector, especially needs owners, to work actively within selected workgroups and workflows in CEN and CENELEC.
- Disseminate information about standards in the healthcare sector.
- Involvement of civil society: The views of voluntary organisations should also be consulted in the work relating to standards. The first meeting was held on 29 February at Standards Norway’s offices.
- Consider Nordic collaboration, so that we can learn from each other and have a louder voice in our work on AI standards.
