The EU and the EEA

EU flag

The Norwegian health sector is affected by the EU's agenda. To monitor, participate and contribute to policy developments in the EU is an important part of the Norwegian Directorate of Health’s work.

Most of the EU's health related cooperation has been included in the EEA Agreement from the start. Amongst others the Directorate of Health has tasks related to implementation of regulations and directives adopted under the EEA Agreement.

In addition, a number of EU initiatives in the field of health have opened for Norwegian participation, and the Directorate of Health takes part in a number of initiatives on a voluntary basis.

Promote interests in the field of public health

There are several established areans where the Norwegian Directorate of Health participates together with other official institutions to promote and safeguard Norwegian interests in the field of public health. E.g. the special committee for health, a contact and a reference committee and EFTA’s working group on public health.

In addition, networks and contacts in Brussels are important, so we strive to have good contact with the Special Representative for Health at the Norwegian mission to the EU and the Norwegian Seconded National Experts working in DG Sanco.

Program participation and the national focal point

Norway participates in the EU’s Health Program (2008-2013) and the EU's Drugs Prevention and Information Program (2007-2013). The Directorate of Health is the national focal point for both programs.
